Hier und da verschonte das Erdbeben historische Gebäude – und in viele der alten Häuser zogen nach der Reparatur der Erdbebenschäden nette Galerien und Shops ein.

Dem Erdbeben trotzten die gewaltigen Bäume im Botanischen Garten, der ein echter Lieblingsplatz ist. Besonders Ende Oktober, wenn alles blüht. So schön, dass ich den zweiten Frühling des Jahres hier erleben durfte! 🌹🌼🌿

Here and there, the old buildings in Christchurch could be saved - and after the earthquake damage was repaired, nice galleries and stores moved into many of the old houses.

The huge trees in the botanical garden, which is one of my favorite places, defied the earthquake. Especially at the end of October, when everything is in bloom and I get to experience the second spring of the year here. 🌿🌼🌹

Christchurch reinvented (English below)

Wollt ihr mich – mal wieder – durch Neuseeland begleiten?

Wenn man beruflich regelmäßig ein Land besucht, ist ja vieles Routine. Ich versuche aber, an bekannten Orten immer wieder etwas Neues für mich zu entdecken.

Neuseeland ist nicht nur wilde Natur, sondern hat auch ein paar spannende Städte zu bieten – wie Christchurch.

Nach dem entsetzlichen Erdbeben 2011 musste sich die Stadt zwangsläufig neu erfinden. Die Bausubstanz aus kolonialer Zeit war nur noch ein großer Steinhaufen. So wurde aus einer englischen Stadt im Südpazifik eine bikulturelle Stadt, die der ansässige Maori-Stamm mitgestaltete.

Mit viel Streetart (hier: Rone, Untitled) hübschte man die Lücken im Stadtbild auf ("The contemporary street art scene was born out of tragedy. Street art has become a vital part of the energy of the rejuvenated city.")

Man baute aber auch eine stylische Pappkathedrale und Hingucker im Stadtbild mit Maori-Motiven wie das Veranstaltungszentrum Te Pae.

When you visit a country again and again on business, a lot of things become routine. But I always make sure that I discover new things for myself in familiar places.

New Zealand is not only wild nature, but also has some exciting cities to offer - like Christchurch.

After the devastating earthquake in 2011, Christchurch was forced to reinvent itself. The buildings from colonial times were almost completely destroyed. An English city in the South Pacific was transformed into a bicultural city, which the local Maori tribe helped to shape.

The gaps in the cityscape were filled with street art, a cardboard cathedral and new buildings with Maori motifs such as the Te Pae event center were built.

Die Adventszeit ist perfekt, um das Jahr noch einmal vorbeiziehen zu lassen, in Fotodatenbanken zu stöbern und Erinnerungen aufzufrischen. Der Aufruf dazu kommt Jahr für Jahr von Michael vom Reiseblog @erkundediewelt und ich bin zum dritten Mal dabei mit meinen Lieblingsfotos.
Die Favoriten stammen aus Island, Schottland, von den Färöern, aus Bordeaux und Singapur.

Das passt nebenbei perfekt zur tollen Challenge #jahresrückblog23 von Judith von @sympatexter . Dafür werde ich noch ein bisschen tiefer in die Erinnerungskiste greifen müssen …

Am Sonntagabend gefällt mir die Stadt besonders gut, wenn sie nicht nur für Besucher glitzert, sondern die Einheimischen sich zum Feiern am Singapore River versammeln. Darunter die unzähligen Hausmädchen aus Indonesien und von den Philippinen, die am Sonntag frei haben.

I particularly like the city on Sunday evenings, when it is not just glittering for visitors, but the locals gather to celebrate along the Singapore River. Among them are the countless housemaids from Indonesia and the Philippines, who have Sunday off.

Singapore Little India (English below)

Nein, das sind keine Weihnachtskugeln, das Foto habe auf dem indischen Basar aufgenommen.

Wahrscheinlich hat Singapur die meisten Feiertage der Welt, denn im Multikultistaat feiert man die Feste der anderen Ethnien einfach mit. Während im November an der Orchard Road schon die Weihnachtsdeko glitzert, feiert man in Little India Deewali, das Lichterfest. Und zwar ganz ohne Bollywood-Drama, sondern fast so besinnlich wie die deutsche Weihnacht. Und da passen die Kugeln dann ja auch wieder 😉

Singapore probably has the most public holidays in the world, as the multicultural state simply celebrates the festivals of all ethnic groups. While the Christmas decorations glitter already on Orchard Road in November, Little India celebrates Deewali, the festival of lights.

Singapur ist nicht nur futuristische Architektur, sondern auch immer noch altes Asien. Kulturell und kulinarisch.

Singapurs "Peranakan" haben meist sowohl chinesische als auch malaiische Wurzeln, sind also ein typischer Singapur-Mix. Und doch sehr besonders. Sie haben ihre eigene (Koch)Kultur bewahrt. Laksa, für mich eine der besten Suppenkreationen weltweit, ist typisch für die Peranakan-Küche.

Kürzlich hat das wunderbare Peranakan-Museum wieder eröffnet, das zu meinen Favoriten in einer Stadt mit vielen tollen Museen gehört.

Singapore is not only futuristic architecture, but also still old Asia. Culturally and culinary.

Singapore's "Peranakan" usually have both Chinese and Malay roots, making them a typical Singaporean mix. And yet very special. They have preserved their own (cooking) culture. Laksa, for me one of the best soup creations in the world, is typical of Peranakan cuisine.

Recently, the wonderful Peranakan Museum reopened, which is one of my favorites in a city with many wonderful museums.

City in the garden – Singapore English below)

Und noch ein letzter Eindruck von den futuristischen Seiten Singapurs: der Blick von den großartigen Gardens by the Bay bis zum Singapore Flyer, dem zweitgrößten Riesenrad der Welt.

Apropos Garten: Singapur ist schon jetzt die grünste Weltstadt, die ich kenne. Hat aber noch viel vor. Aus der “Garden City” soll eine “ City in the Garden” werden.

Ein Aspekt: Kletterpflanzen statt Glitzerfassaden heißt das Motto im Stadtstaat. Sie sorgen dafür, dass die Außenhaut der Wolkenkratzer nur fünfundzwanzig Grad warm wird statt fünfzig und enorme Mengen an Kühlungsenergie spart. Und gut für die Stimmung ist das Grün sowieso.

And one last impression of the futuristic side of Singapore: the view from the Gardens by the Bay to the Singapore Flyer, the second largest Ferris wheel in the world.

Speaking of gardens: Singapore is already the greenest world city I know. But it still has big plans. The "Garden City" shall become a "City in the Garden".

One aspect: climbing plants instead of glittering facades is the motto in the city state. They ensure that the outer skin of the skyscrapers is only twenty-five degrees instead of fifty, saving enormous amounts of cooling energy.

Den Stadtteil Marina Bay gibt es noch nicht so lange. Er liegt auf Land, das dem Meer abgerungen wurde. Die Architekturwunder aus der Ideenkiste von Stararchitekt Moshe Safdie sind beachtlich. Neben dem Marina Bay Sands hier das Art and Sience Museum in Form einer Lotusblüte. Daneben die Türme des Financial Districts.

The Marina Bay district has not been around that long. It is located on newly created land that was reclaimed from the sea. The architectural wonders from star architect Moshe Safdie's box of ideas are remarkable. Next to the Marina Bay Sands here is the Art and Sience Museum in the shape of a lotus blossom. Next to it are the towers of the Financial District.

Singapore at its best (English below)

Als ich in den 1980ern zum ersten Mal in Singapur war, war die Stadt als einzige asiatische Metropole sauber und chaosfrei, leider auch stinklangweilig. Heute freue ich mich jedes Mal, wenn ich auf meinen Neuseeland-Reisen für zwei Tage Station mache und die neuesten Wunder der Stadt bewundern darf.

Die Helix Bridge vor der Kulisse des Finanzzentrums, die der menschlichen DNA nachempfunden ist, ist immer wieder magisch im frühen Morgenlicht.

When I first visited Singapore in the 1980s, the city was clean, well-organized and boring as hell. Today, I'm delighted every time I stop off for two days on my trips to New Zealand and get to admire the city's latest wonders. The Helix Bridge, modeled on human DNA, is magical in the early morning light.

Lake Skadar – Birdwatcher' s Paradise (🇬🇧 below)

Der Skadar-See, den sich Montenegro und Albanien teilen, ist der größte See des Balkans. Und touristisch noch recht unschuldig.

Eine Gegend, in der viel Wein wächst und unzählige Vögel leben wie Schwäne, Reiher, Kormorane, die du abends bei einer Bootsfahrt beobachten kannst. Sogar ein Pelikan flatterte vor uns durch die Lüfte.

Ein rundum schöner Tag – leider der letzte in Montenegro. Am liebsten wäre ich nach Albanien weitergereist, wohin ich 2020 schon den Flieger gebucht hatte, als die Welt zum Stillstand kam. Aber aufgeschoben ist ja nicht aufgehoben …

Lake Skadar, shared by Montenegro and Albania, is the largest lake in the Balkans. And touristically still quite innocent.

An area where a lot of wine grows and countless birds live, which I could observe on a boat trip. Even a pelican fluttered through the air.

An all around beautiful day – unfortunately the last in Montenegro. I would have loved to travel on to Albania, to where I had already booked the plane in 2020.
